Practice Based Ad Hoc Small Group Learning Program

The Practice Based Small Group (PBSG) Learning Program was first established in 1992 to help family physicians develop a supportive network in which group members could discuss problem cases in a way that would facilitate change in knowledge, attitudes, and skills. The Practice Based Ad hoc Small Group Learning Program is based on the same principle and philosophy as the Practice Based Small Group Learning Program and is designed for physicians who cannot, or prefer not to, commit to an ongoing small group.

Ad hoc Workshops

The Practice Based Ad hoc Workshops are organized as stand alone events that are sponsored by interested third parties, or in collaboration with other educational or professional organizations (for example, the College of Family Physicians of Canada or its provincial chapters, University CME departments). Facilitators for these events are recruited from the pool of experienced facilitators in the PBSG Learning Program who have received additional training in facilitating ad hoc groups, and who have been specifically briefed on the topic to be addressed at each event.

Study Credits

The Ad Hoc Small Group Learning Program is accredited for MAINPRO-M1 and MAINPRO-C credits by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. MAINPRO-M1 credits are awarded on a per-hour basis to those who wish only to participate in the event itself; 2 MAINPRO-C credits per topic are alloted to those who successfully complete a post event educational exercise.

Each education module will be discussed over a 1.5 to 2 hour period. Following the workshop, registrants complete a personal learning log sheet for the module covered, to provide evidence that they have reflected on the educational material and activity within the context of their own practices. These personal learning log sheets are then revisited and completed by each workshop participant, (ideally within a three month period), and sent to The Foundation for Medical Practice Education office where they will be reviewed to determine the awarding of MAINPRO-C credits. The Ad hoc Small Group Learning Program has been accredited by The College of Family Physicians for 2 MAINPRO -C credits for each module studied during the workshop.
